On Saturday, June 3, Barcelona overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Wolfsburg 3-2 and claim their second Women’s Champions League championship.

With barely 2 minutes and 57 seconds gone, Ewa Pajor’s breathtaking goal gave Wolfsburg the lead. The Polish international got possession of the ball on the outskirts of the box before launching an incredible shot that Sandra Panos was powerless to stop.

After 13 minutes, Barcelona had a wonderful opportunity to tie the game at 1-1, but Irene Paredes sprang up at the back post and missed with a free header.

Over a significant portion of the first half, the Spanish team kept up its offensive pressure and put Wolfsburg’s defence on the back foot.

But, eight minutes before halftime, Wolfsburg made it 2-0. Alexandra Popp was on hand to head the ball beyond Panos with her header to send Wolfsburg into a trance after goal scorer Pajor had turned provider for the second.

Barcelona started the second half off well and scored a goal within the first three minutes. Patricia Guijarro successfully evaded her defender after a great move by Caroline Graham Hansen, and she rifled the ball past Merle Frohms.

Just two minutes later, the Catalan team equalised. Aitana Bonmati cut inside before feeding Guijarro, who went on to score her second goal of the day.

Barcelona finished up their comeback in the 70th minute by taking advantage of some shoddy German defence. Fridolina Rolfo was able to score when Wolfsburg struggled to clear the ball, which led to a brief period of pinball in the box.

After four appearances in the Champions League final, Barcelona has won its second Women’s Champions League championship. Wolfsburg is still seeking their first UWCL championship since 2014.

Asisat Oshoala of the Super Falcon of Nigeria was injured in the hamstring and was unable to play for Barcelona in the championship game.

With 26 goals across all competitions this season, including five in the Champions League, the 28-year-old Nigerian has been in excellent form. Before to the game, Barca announced that the striker had hurt her left thigh.

Both clubs’ seasons come to an end with the Champions League final, and many of the stars in this game are now focusing on the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

There are under 50 days till the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. When the group stages begin, some players from each finalist will play for their national teams. On July 20, when co-hosts Australia and New Zealand take against Norway and Ireland, respectively, the World Cup will get underway.
