Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 Kogi governorship election, criticized former Benue state governor Samuel Ortom during a pivotal meeting of major stakeholders from the opposition party’s north-central geopolitical zone on Wednesday, April 17, in Abuja.

Expressing his dismay, Melaye questioned Ortom’s presence at the PDP gathering, given his alleged anti-party activities that purportedly contributed to the party’s losses in the presidential and gubernatorial elections in Benue State. Melaye called for the PDP to take disciplinary action against Ortom.

Melaye’s outspoken criticism sparked a verbal altercation between the two politicians.

Meanwhile, party leaders from the north-central region emerged from the meeting, asserting their demand that the zone produce the next national chairman of the party at the forthcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

In a separate development in Abuja, Atiku Abubakar, the former presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2019 and 2023 general elections, and Nyesom Wike, the federal capital territory (FCT) minister, attended the PDP’s national caucus meeting on Wednesday, April 17, ahead of the party’s NEC gathering.

The NEC meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18. This marks Wike’s first appearance at a PDP meeting since the 2023 presidential election. Wike, who has clashed with the PDP leadership, did not endorse the party’s selection of Atiku as its presidential candidate for the 2023 election. Speculation suggests that the FCT minister supported the candidacy of President Bola Tinubu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
