The Ghana Police Service has strengthened its security presence in the region ahead of the impending Assin North Constituency by-election in order to guarantee a calm and orderly polling process.
Social media users have been sharing a video of uniformed police officers participating in a parade to indicate that they are ready to keep the peace during the by-election.
The police authorities have aggressively tried to stop any possible protests or electoral fraud, with the by-election slated for June 27, 2023.
The by-election is the outcome of a Supreme Court decision from April 13, 2023, which mandated the expulsion from parliament of James Gyakye Quayson, the previous representative for Assin North Constituency, for holding dual citizenship.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided to run James Gyakye Quayson in the by-election against the court’s decision.
Gyakye Quayson of the NDC, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana will compete in the eagerly awaited by-election (LPG).
The NPP and NDC have sent well-known individuals to campaign in the district. Charles Opoku has received active support from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other NPP national executives, while Gyakye Quayson has received backing from former President John Dramani Mahama, Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and other NDC officials.
The single female candidate in the by-election, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, has been supported by Kofi Apkaloo, the founder of the LPG and a contender for the presidency.
