Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will triumph over the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2026 governorship election in the state.

Oyetola made this statement on Friday in Osogbo while welcoming prominent PDP members, Dotun Babayemi, a former governorship aspirant, and Shuaibu Oyedokun, a former National Deputy Chairman of the party, into the APC.

The Minister encouraged APC members to accept the new defectors without discrimination.

“It is ironic that we lost an election over a year ago, yet there have been no major defections from our party. Instead, the ruling party is coming to us, showing that the APC remains the party to beat.

“We have performed well, and people are recognizing that the Progressives excel in governance. Alhaji Shuaibu and Dotun Babayemi, who were previously with the APC, have returned after experiencing the difference between progressive and conservative governance,” Oyetola said.

Mr. Tajudeen Lawal, the state APC chairman, assured that Babayemi and other defectors would receive the same opportunities as existing members.

“Your decision to join the APC is wise and divinely guided, as the APC is truly a party of the people,” Lawal stated.

Babayemi announced that he, his political network, and members of his Atunto group had joined the opposition party.

“Since Oyetola left office, the situation in Osun has deteriorated. We must work to bring the APC government back to Osun. From today, our meetings will be APC-focused, from the ward to local councils and at the state level,” Babayemi declared.

Oyedokun explained his departure from the PDP, citing a deviation from the party’s founding ideals.

Akinsola Basiru, the APC National Secretary, welcomed the new members and urged them to integrate fully into the party.

“I welcome you into our party on behalf of the National Working Committee. Do not feel like strangers,” Basiru said.

APC flags were subsequently presented to Oyedokun and the other defectors.
