The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is witnessing a notable influx of defectors from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a development that the party chapter embraces as a reinforcement of their stance for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Hon. Chief Offor Okorie, the Abia State Publicity Secretary for the APC, lauded the surge of newcomers as a source of motivation for existing members. However, cautioning against hasty actions, he stressed during a press briefing in Umuahia that the party strictly adheres to national guidelines governing the registration of new members and defectors. According to the party’s constitution, all registrations must take place at the ward level. Any deviation from this process, he likened to a mere “children’s variety show.”

In response to queries regarding the recent defection of former Abia State House of Assembly Speaker Hon. Chinedu Ahamefula Orji, popularly known as Ikuku, Mr. Offor underscored the importance of observing proper protocols.

“If he failed to complete the defection process at the ward level, his registration is deemed illegal and unconstitutional.

“Registering as an APC member entails more than merely filling out a form and brandishing a broom; there are established procedures that must be followed. As a former speaker, Hon. Chinedu Orji should be well-versed in the correct protocol,” asserted the APC spokesperson.

Mr. Offor further disclosed that a significant portion of Abia State APC national officers and key stakeholders were unaware of these defections.

While affirming the party’s open-door policy towards defectors, he reiterated that registration must align with the party’s constitution. More than mere announcements on social media platforms are required; adherence to proper procedures is imperative.
