The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara to gauge his political influence by organising local government elections in the state.

The party also criticised the current state of affairs under Governor Fubara, asserting that Rivers State is veering dangerously towards becoming a pariah state and sinking into obscurity.

During a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, in response to a media conference by certain PDP leaders pledging support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Fubara, APC state chairman Chief Tony Okocha denounced the Dr. Abiye Sekibo-led PDP faction as “troublemakers.” Okocha suggested that if the group truly cared about the state’s welfare, they should focus on resolving internal issues rather than acting as informants and undermining the party.

The briefing, attended by Dr. Abiye Sekibo, Uche Secondus, Austin Opara, Celestine Omehia, Tele Ikuru, Senator Lee Maeba, and Dr. Gabriel Pidomson, among others, highlighted the self-inflicted political turmoil in Rivers State. Okocha emphasised that both Governor Fubara and the 32 Assembly members hailed from the same party and family, with Governor Wike as their leader.

Regarding recent expressions of support for President Tinubu, Okocha suggested that those who previously criticised the President and now acknowledge his leadership should follow proper procedures for switching parties rather than resorting to coercion or manipulation.

Okocha cautioned against using intimidation tactics, emphasising that such methods are outdated and ineffective. He questioned the sincerity of those pledging support to President Tinubu, asking whether they have withdrawn their legal challenges against the President’s intervention in Rivers State’s political crisis.

In essence, the APC’s message underscores a call for transparency, adherence to due process, and a focus on constructive dialogue rather than confrontational tactics in addressing political issues in Rivers State.
