Ali Bongo Ondimba, the president of Gabon, said on Sunday that he would run for a third term in office.
President Omar Bongo Ondimba succeeded him in office in 2009, and he was barely re-elected two years later.
The president announced at a rally, saying, “Dear compatriots, fellow Gabonese, to continue to write this history and this future together, because nothing matters more than the success of our country because nothing matters more than your success, I am officially announcing here today that I am a candidate!”
Over 15 contenders announced their intentions to run for president on August 26 after the opposition was unable to settle on a single candidate.
“I firmly believe that we are capable of repeating our greatest successes. On matters that are important to you, me, and our nation. By uniting in a struggle for the jobs that give life purpose, to lower living expenses, and to ease the burdens of daily life on ourselves and our families “, Ali Bongo Ondimba committed.
Elections for the National Assembly, regional councils, and municipal governments will all take place concurrently with the presidential vote.
