In what would undoubtedly rank as one of football’s biggest fairytales, Lionel Messi finally received the one prize he had been lacking.
The 35-year-old has now admitted that the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 will probably be the conclusion of his extraordinary career.
The legendary Barcelona player, who has won a record seven Ballon d’Ors, a stunning 42 winner’s medals for club and country, is close to joining MLS team Inter Miami.
When asked if he could lead Argentina to another World Cup, he responded, “I think not,” to Titan Sports.
“[2022] was my final World Cup,” he continued. I’ll wait and see how things turn out, but in general, no, I won’t attend the next World Cup.
David Beckham and Messi have agreed to join MLS club Inter Miami, and the agreement is anticipated to be finalised in the coming weeks.
Before the 2026 World Cup, which the US will co-host with its neighbours Mexico and Canada, Messi’s entry into the MLS is anticipated to boost the sport’s popularity significantly.
