After a four-match suspension from UEFA, Jose Mourinho announces his resignation.
Jose Mourinho, the manager of AS Roma, has decided to resign from his seat on the UEFA board.
The Portuguese international made the choice to resign from his post after UEFA chose to suspend him for four matches for the altercation he had with Anthony Taylor during the Europa League final. The Athletic has learned that Jose Mourinho wrote to Zvonimir Boban, the head of football at UEFA and board chair.
In a letter to UEFA, Mourinho said that the ideals for which he first joined the organisation had changed, and that was why he was leaving.
“I want to thank you for inviting me to join the UEFA football board, but I must regretfully let you know that I will be relinquishing my membership in this organisation as of right now. I felt compelled to make this choice since the circumstances that I joined on no longer apply, despite how strongly I thought they did. I sincerely request that you inform Mr. Aleksander Ceferin, the president, of my decision as well “.
In the match between Roma and Sevilla, the referee’s decision infuriated Jose Mourinho; he thought Taylor was unfair in how he handled the match.
UEFA accused Mourinho of using abusive or derogatory remarks against a match official. After the game, a number of Roma fans followed Taylor and his family to the Budapest Airport, where they were waiting to catch a flight home.
