Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, praised Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Baba yesterday for warning political players and their accomplices to disrupt Bola Tinubu’s May 29 presidential inauguration. The body warned against aborting the inauguration. “All those who are offended should be patient and allow the legal process they have already launched to follow its usual course.”
Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, praised the US for restricting visas for anti-democratic actors. Ajayi said: “Since the end of the presidential election on February 25 and the announcement of Tinubu as the winner, allegations are rife of various measures being undertaken to block the inauguration of the President-elect on May 29.
Some supported an interim administration, which was widely criticised. Aside from Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Datti Ahmed’s statement, Dr. Simon Okeke, the Chairman of a non-governmental organisation, told the media in Abuja this weekend that the President-inauguration elect’s on May 29 would be an invitation to anarchy. “It could be that more clandestine attempts along the same line, thus the warning made on May 4,” he said.
The organisation also urged the outgoing Muhammadu Buhari government to reconsider its proposed $800 million World Bank loan, which would add to the debt burden, which the Debt Management Office (DMO) estimated at over N77 trillion. It stated that Nigeria’s debt burden in 2015 was N12.6 trillion, but it is now around N80 trillion, which is worrisome. The organisation believed the Tinubu administration would match Nigerians’ high expectations.
