Prof. Felix Chukwuneke, founder of the Chisom Enyinnia Chukwuneke Medical Foundation, explains that the foundation was established to honour his late daughter’s dreams.
In his 186th inaugural lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) yesterday, Prof. Chukwuneke, dean of the faculty of dentistry, revealed that his daughter switched from software engineering to medicine two weeks before her MOC exam in 2019.
He said she chose to study medicine to treat children from low-income families with health issues.
“My daughter was always very passionate about the survival of poor children who do not have access to the best health care like her”.
The University of Nigeria’s maxillofacial surgeon explained that the Chisom Chukwuneke Medical Foundation was founded to help poor children with health issues achieve their academic goals.
Prof. Nzube Felix Chukwuneke of Oba, Anambra State, released #5million and passionately appealed to wealthy and multi-national bodies inside and outside the country to support the foundation to ensure its success.
Born on August 24, 2003, Chisom Enyinnia Chukwuneke was the best in the 2019 Graceland College, Enugu WAEC exams. She died in a South African hospital after a brief illness on October 18, 2020.
In the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s 186th inaugural lecture, Prof. Felix Chukwuneke announced that the faculty of dentistry’s surgeons have developed local surgical innovations to treat patients without conventional methods.
The maxillofacial surgeon reported that developing countries like Nigeria have adopted the new model discovered by the faculty due to its widespread success.
He also found that poverty, superstition, ignorance, poor health-seeking behaviours, and limited treatment options lead to the late presentation of illness, making it harder to find a cure.
Prof. Ikenna Nzimiro gave the first lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1976 on “The Crisis in the Social Sciences, the Nigerian Situation” to encourage research and academic excellence.
The 186th inaugural lecture drew a large crowd, including the Deputy Vice-chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Enugu-Campus-UNEC, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, Prof. Charles Igwe, two former provosts of the College of Medicine, Prof. Basden Onwubere and Prof. Ernest Onwasigwe, and former dean of the dentistry faculty, Prof. Oge Linda Okoye.
