Neil Lennon, a former midfielder for Manchester City, thinks that Rangers made a wise financial move when they decided to purchase Cyriel Dessers from Cremonese. Rangers have failed to win the league in the previous two seasons, but Lennon thinks Dessers might help them reverse that.
Dessers, a 28-year-old striker from Nigeria, has agreed to a €5 million move to former Scottish Premiership winners Rangers.
After a lacklustre debut season in the Serie A, he left Cremonese. Despite scoring seven goals in 32 appearances, the former Genk player was unable to save the team from being relegated.
With the departure of first-choice striker Alfredo Morelos this summer, Rangers lost some of their offensive potency, thus, they will be relying heavily on Dessers’ calibre in the next year.
Over the course of his nine-year career, the Nigerian striker has gained a tonne of experience. Dessers has currently played for nine clubs, with Rangers being his ninth.
Lennon, a former player for Manchester City and current coach of Celtic, has praised Rangers for their selection of the Nigerian striker.
According to Lennon of Glasgow Live, “I saw him [Dessers] when he was at Heracles, and he was the top goalscorer in the Dutch league that season.
He is a big, strong player with soft feet and a little bit of technique occasionally.
“But he scores goals, and at £4.5 million, I believe he could be a great acquisition for Rangers. They were in need of a striker, and they now have one on the premises.
“He’s a physical type and has a good goal record. Strong, quick, and motivated. That’s a respectable business for £4.5 million.
Dessers has begun preseason training with the German Rangers. They will face Hoffenheim, Olympiakos, Newcastle United, and Hamburger SV.
