‘A formidable team’

The reigning Nigeria Professional Football League winner, Enyimba, played Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi on Sunday night.
Kanu Nwankwo, a former Arsenal player, has backed Enyimba International despite their 4-3 defeat to Al Ahly Benghazi in the CAF Champions League opener, Soccernet.ng reported.

Chijioke Mbaoma gave the Nigerian champions the lead in a tough contest on a hot Sunday evening in Benghazi.

The game was heading for a well-deserved 3-3 draw after 90 minutes. Hamadi Gadallah’s late header gave Lassaad Dridi’s team the win.

The Enyimba FC Chairman, Nwankwo, highlighted the game’s merits.

“Our guys gave their everything on the field today,” he told Enyimba FC’s website. “They battled a tough squad with passion. The guys’ effort and perseverance mattered more than the outcome, Nwankwo said. They performed well and I praise them.”

Nwankwo’s optimism reached the team’s tournament perspective after the game.

Considering what we witnessed in this game, I’m convinced we can guarantee qualifying in Aba in the return leg, said the 47-year-old. The 4-3 result guarantees the second leg will be thrilling, something supporters back home will adore.

The crucial return match will take place at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba on Sunday, August 27, at 3 PM local time.
