Reasons we “agreed” to have Finidi as our head coach – Ikpeba

Victor Ikpeba, a member of the technical committee responsible for selecting the new coach for the Super Eagles, revealed the rationale behind choosing Finidi George for the position.

Following Jose Peseiro’s departure after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in February, George was announced as the new Super Eagles coach on Monday.

Ikpeba explained that the committee had initially preferred a foreign coach to build upon Peseiro’s work but ultimately opted for George due to financial considerations.

“We congratulate Finidi George on his appointment,” Ikpeba said during Monday Night Football on Super Sports. “It was a tough decision because we initially leaned towards a foreign manager. However, financial constraints led us to choose Finidi.”

He emphasized that while the committee had confidence in Nigerian coaches, continuity from Peseiro’s tenure was deemed important. The decision was also influenced by Nigerians’ desire for a homegrown coach.

“We can afford a foreign manager, but there’s a preference for a Nigerian coach,” Ikpeba noted. “That’s why we have Finidi now.”

Finidi will lead the Super Eagles in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic in June. Currently, the team sits third in Group C of the African campaign.
